Research on Infrastructure in Developing Economies

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face ongoing transport challenges: underdeveloped infrastructure that is economically inefficient, environmentally damaging, and socially exclusive.

The UK-funded Research on Infrastructure in Developing Economies (RIDE) Programme accelerates applied research and innovation responding to the prioritised needs of LMICs, while helping mobilise private finance to overcome chronic underinvestment.

Putting People and the Planet at the Centre of Transport Transitions

As we move into the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2030), RIDE aims to redefine how evidence informs transport policy and investment.

We identify strategic research priorities to close persistent knowledge gaps and generate insights that:

  • strengthen national transport transitions
  • support inclusive economic growth, accelerate low-carbon, resilient, and climate-compatible infrastructure
  • bridge the divide between research and finance

Our Approach – Research. Partnerships. Innovation.

  • Research

RIDE generates policy-relevant, demand-driven evidence on transport systems and the mobilisation of private finance.

  • Partnerships

RIDE identifies research demand and faciliates uptake into practise through leveraging expert networks and establishing Communities of Practice.

  • Innovation

The Transport Innovation Hub (TIH) provides a platform to test, refine, and scale early-stage transport solutions that address LMIC needs.

A Collaborative Programme

As a platform programme, RIDE operates through a collaborative model with UK International Development as the primary funder, providing core strategic investment and direction, and is complemented by co-financing from Shell Foundation and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

RIDE programme delivery is carried out by implementation partners, including GIZ, WRI, TRL and the Shell Foundation, who lead on science, innovation and technology activities.

RIDE’s Contribution to the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport

The Research on Infrastructure in Developing Economies (RIDE) Programme constitutes a voluntary contribution by UK International Development to the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport. RIDE catalyses change through science, innovation and technology for inclusive, sustainable, economic growth and climate action.

Through targeted research, data generation and the testing of innovative approaches, RIDE strengthens the evidence base responding to the demand from low- and middle-income countries to inform planning and financing sustainable transport solutions. In doing so, it supports national transport transitions and contributes to the collective progress sought under the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport.

Building on Previous Research Programmes

The RIDE Programme builds on the experience and evidence generated through previous UK-funded research initiatives delivered by the funding consortium. These programmes have advanced applied research, capacity building, and policy engagement in transport and infrastructure across low- and middle-income countries.
